Keir Starmer has condemned Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding British troops in Afghanistan as “offensive and shocking,” suggesting that an apology may be warranted.
The Prime Minister responded to the US President’s assertion that NATO allies, including the UK, did not have a significant frontline presence in Afghanistan. This statement disregarded the sacrifices made by 457 British troops who lost their lives and many others who sustained life-altering injuries during the conflict.
Starmer emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “If I had made such a mistake, I would certainly offer an apology.” He paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the fallen British personnel and expressed his deep appreciation for their service to the country.
In a similar vein, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson criticized Trump for downplaying the contributions of NATO forces, highlighting the significant role British troops played in combat operations following the 9/11 attacks. The spokesperson reiterated the UK’s pride in its armed forces and emphasized the importance of honoring their service and sacrifices.
Various individuals, including Armed Forces Minister Al Carns and Labour MP Clive Lewis, voiced their outrage over Trump’s remarks, describing them as “ridiculous” and “deliberately provocative.” They stressed the need for respect and recognition of the efforts and sacrifices made by service members and their families in Afghanistan.
Diane Dernie, a mother of a severely injured soldier, urged the British government to confront Trump and defend the honor of British armed forces against such disrespectful comments. Similarly, other bereaved families and veterans expressed their dismay over Trump’s remarks, calling for accountability and acknowledgment of the realities faced by those who served on the front lines.
