“Poundland Closes 150 Stores, Cuts 2,200 Jobs”

Poundland recently announced the closure of nearly 150 stores and the elimination of 2,200 jobs as part of its restructuring plan. The discount retailer now operates 651 stores, down from approximately 800, and its workforce has been reduced from 14,200 to around 12,000 employees. Additionally, two warehouses located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, were shut down as part of the company’s reorganization.

Following its acquisition by investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1 in June last year, Poundland avoided administration by securing approval for its rescue strategy, which included store closures, in the High Court in August. The company has confirmed the completion of its restructuring program but emphasized the need for further efforts to regain stability.

Poundland stated that any future store closures would be a result of standard business lease events typical for a retailer with a large store network. Recent data from Poundland indicated a 2.9% decline in like-for-like sales for the quarter ending on December 28, attributed to price reductions aimed at returning to its discount-oriented approach. Despite this, comparable store sales by volume increased by 2%.

In the first quarter, underlying earnings at Poundland rose to £17.3 million from £8.4 million, aligning with the company’s projections. Managing director Barry Williams acknowledged the progress made in reorienting the business towards lower prices and a more focused product offering but acknowledged the ongoing challenges ahead.

Looking ahead, Poundland aims to concentrate on delivering the product ranges and price simplicity desired by customers in various departments, including clothing, homewares, and grocery items. The company has reintroduced a simplified pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 for groceries across all UK stores, with a majority of grocery items priced at £1. Furthermore, Poundland has discontinued certain product categories like frozen foods and some chilled goods, as well as ceasing its online operations.

Poundland is set to reintroduce its in-house designed Pep&Co clothing to stores in the UK and Ireland, featuring items priced below £10. Additionally, a nationwide advertising campaign is scheduled to launch next week to promote the value of its product offerings.
