In the process of filming the Netflix adaptation of Carley Fortune’s novel “This Summer Will Be Different,” the scenic beauty of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) will take center stage. Tourism P.E.I. has introduced custom-made benches designed by Mel Burke of Black Cat Woodcraft at key locations featured in the popular book. The initiative aims to offer a fresh “literary tourism experience” that highlights the natural landscapes and communities of the island.
According to a statement from the province, the benches were carefully crafted to harmonize with the surrounding environment, drawing inspiration from the sand dunes, waves, and beaches that define P.E.I.’s coastline. These benches are envisioned to form a “growing literary trail,” enhancing the connection between the story depicted in the novel and the real places that inspired it.
The initial set of benches can now be found at Basin Head Provincial Park and Point Prim Lighthouse, with plans to unveil two more benches soon. In Fortune’s book, the protagonist, Lucy Ashby, embarks on a vacation to P.E.I. where she encounters Felix “Wolf” Clark, the younger brother of her best friend, Bridget. Despite her attempts to avoid Felix during subsequent visits, their paths continue to cross.
Crafted from cedar and featuring seating on both sides, the benches encourage interaction as individuals sitting across from each other naturally establish eye contact. This design concept, as described by Burke, embodies the essence of an organic “meet cute,” resonating with the romantic theme of the novel and the idea of fostering genuine connections.
Burke shared that the project cost approximately $7,000 and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute creatively. She emphasized the personal connection she felt to the book’s themes, reflecting on the parallels between the main character’s journey and her own aspirations as an artist and artisan.
Tourism P.E.I. affirmed its commitment to collaborating with Fortune to identify additional locations that best capture the essence of her literary work. The installation of these unique benches not only enhances the visitor experience but also pays homage to the captivating narrative of “This Summer Will Be Different.”
