“Record Attendance Expected at AMO Conference in Ottawa”

Record-breaking attendance is anticipated in Ottawa this week as thousands of municipal representatives gather for the annual conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). Local leaders are poised to advocate for stable funding and increased support in addressing pressing issues like homelessness and aging infrastructure. The event serves as a platform for representatives from various municipalities, including cities, towns, and rural communities, to participate in policy discussions and engage directly with provincial ministers. Taking place from Sunday to Wednesday at Ottawa’s Rogers Centre, the conference will feature a keynote address from Premier Doug Ford on Monday morning.

AMO’s focus this year revolves around the mounting challenges faced by municipalities concerning service provision and infrastructure development. Outgoing AMO president Robin Jones emphasized the critical need for sustained funding for housing, economic initiatives, and provincial health and social services. Jones highlighted the financial strain on municipalities due to the transfer of numerous costs in recent years, with most of the burden falling on their property tax revenues. AMO projects a requirement of over $250 billion in infrastructure investments over the next decade to address growth, climate change, and the maintenance of aging essential systems statewide.

Delegates are advocating for increased provincial funding directed towards community housing, mental health services, and addiction support. They estimate a budget of $11 billion over the next decade to combat chronic homelessness effectively. This year’s conference coincides with an election year, adding a political aspect as mayors and councillors engage with the public and gear up for upcoming elections in October. In addition to Premier Ford, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and incoming AMO President Ottawa Coun. Riley Brockington are slated to deliver speeches during the event.
