“Nurse Shot at Protest Sparks Nationwide Outrage”

Amidst recent events in the United States, the tragic death of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, during a protest against immigration crackdowns has garnered significant attention. The incident, where Pretti was fatally shot while being restrained by federal agents, has ignited unrest across the nation, particularly in Minneapolis, the location of the shooting.

This unfortunate event is not an isolated incident involving United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. In a similar tragedy on January 7, Renée Good was also shot by an immigration officer, with the distressing incident captured on video and shared globally.

Further highlighting challenges at the border, a tourist from Wales, Becky Burke, faced a 19-day detention at an ICE processing center during her North American backpacking trip in March 2025. Burke’s travel plans were disrupted when she was detained for allegedly violating her travel authorization terms due to engaging in work-like activities in exchange for accommodation.

Travelers, including British visitors utilizing the ESTA visa-waiver program, may encounter increased border scrutiny. Authorities are considering a requirement for visitors to disclose five years of social media usernames and ten years of email addresses to enhance security measures.

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the USA is projected to experience a significant decline of $12.5 billion in international visitor spending in 2025, making it the only country out of 184 analyzed to witness such a decline.

Despite the decrease in British tourists visiting the USA by 15% in 2025, the upcoming 2026 World Cup, with matches in various North American locations, including Texas, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, is anticipated to draw large numbers of fans from overseas.

The tourism industry in the USA is poised for major events in 2026, with iconic attractions like Route 66 marking its centenary with celebratory events and festivals along the route. Additionally, the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of American Independence, with extensive celebrations planned to attract both domestic and international tourists.

As travelers consider visiting the USA amid ongoing events, including stringent social media checks, the question arises: Will the allure of major 2026 events outweigh concerns about the political climate? Share your thoughts in our poll and feel free to email us at webtravel@reachplc.com with your reasons for choosing to travel or avoid the USA.
