The parents of a young boy from Herring Cove, N.S., are turning to social media in search of a live kidney donor for their son. Ethan Hackney, 6, was diagnosed with congenital nephrotic syndrome shortly after birth, a rare condition that often leads to irreversible kidney failure. Although a transplant has always been anticipated, recent tests revealed a significant decline in his kidney function from 77% to 24%.
Jenny Hackney, Ethan’s mother, expressed the challenges of facing this situation as a parent, emphasizing the unexpected need to seek a suitable donor for her son. Despite both parents undergoing screening, neither was found to be a compatible match for the transplant. Consequently, they have taken to social media, hoping to connect with someone willing to help save Ethan’s life.
As Ethan prepares to enter Grade 2, his parents have been sharing daily glimpses of their life online, aiming to inspire potential donors to consider participating in the live donation program. Jenny Hackney highlighted the immense commitment and sacrifice involved in such a decision, acknowledging the importance of finding the best possible match for Ethan’s well-being.
Ethan’s declining energy levels have become noticeable in recent times, prompting concerns about his health. The family is specifically seeking a living donor under 40 years old with type O blood, either positive or negative. While Ethan could receive a kidney from a deceased donor, a living donation offers the advantage of a potentially longer-lasting organ due to extensive compatibility testing.
Under Nova Scotia’s living donation program, the Hackneys are kept unaware of the donor process to prioritize Ethan’s care. Despite offers from individuals willing to check their compatibility, the family remains focused on Ethan’s welfare, expressing gratitude to anyone considering stepping forward to help.
The family remains hopeful that through the power of social media and community support, they will find a suitable donor to provide Ethan with a chance at a healthier future.
