“Moodie Station Redesign Needed After Storm Damage”

The chief of OC Transpo has expressed concerns about the extensive damage caused by the storm on July 1 at the LRT’s western extension terminus. Rick Leary mentioned during an OC Transpo town hall meeting in Kanata that the severity of the damage at Moodie station necessitates a complete redesign rather than reinstalling the same infrastructure. This decision follows prior assessments indicating significant floodwater damage to the station.

Leary highlighted the substantial issues at Moodie station, hinting at potential delays in the opening of the western extension, which is already behind schedule. The timeline for redesigning the station remains uncertain. He emphasized the need to evaluate the design and timeframe for reconstruction due to the extent of the damage.

During the town hall event, Leary disclosed that a report detailing the damage at Moodie station is anticipated in mid-September, outlining the necessary replacements. He emphasized the importance of not replicating the previous infrastructure to prevent future washouts, citing the extensive damage caused by the flood.

Leary reiterated the necessity of reassessing the design of Moodie station to ensure a resilient infrastructure, even if it prolongs the opening timeline. He emphasized the importance of getting it right the first time to avoid potential setbacks in the future. A city memo from August 5 mentioned repairs required for electrical equipment, track sections, and ballast at the affected station area.

The western extension forms part of Ottawa’s broader Stage 2 light rail expansion, initially planned for completion by 2023 but now facing potential delays. The city is considering a staged opening for the extension, with further updates expected in early 2027. The mayor acknowledged the concerns surrounding Moodie station’s condition, highlighting the need for detailed impact assessments following the storm.
