Over 100 vehicles collided in a massive traffic incident triggered by heavy snowfall, causing chaos for drivers in the United States. The cars skidded off the road due to the intense snowfall that engulfed the state.
The extensive crash occurred on Monday, January 19 in Michigan following a snowstorm that covered the area. As a result of the significant pileup, Michigan State Police closed Interstate 196 on Monday morning just southwest of Grand Rapids.
A removal operation involving more than 30 trucks was initiated by the authorities, with several injuries reported but fortunately no fatalities. Driver Pedro Mata Jr. described the challenging conditions, mentioning that the cars ahead were barely visible as snow blew across the road while he was driving between 20-25 mph leading up to the accident.
Although he managed to bring his pickup to a safe stop, Mata decided to move his truck off the road into the median to avoid being rear-ended. Mata expressed his fear, stating, “It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you. I saw what was in front of me. I couldn’t see what was behind me exactly.”
Weather warnings have been issued nationwide due to the disruptive winter storm. Storms are expected across various states, starting from northern Minnesota and extending south and east into Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Forecasters cautioned that temperatures would drop below zero overnight on Monday in much of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s office in Michigan received reports of multiple crashes and numerous vehicles sliding off the road.
Drivers found themselves stranded, with bus services transporting them to Hudsonville High School where they could seek assistance. The road is anticipated to remain closed for several hours for cleanup operations.
One of the assisting companies, Grand Valley Towing, dispatched more than a dozen trucks to aid in the operation. Several towing companies are collaborating to clear the aftermath of the chain-reaction collision.
The manager of Grand Valley mentioned, “We’re working diligently to remove as many vehicles as possible promptly, to reopen the road.”
