London Mayor Sadiq Khan expresses dismay at negative narratives about the city as fresh statistics reveal a significant decline in homicides.
Recent data shows a notable decrease in the total number of killings, marking a 14-year low and the lowest rate per population since records inception. Khan emphasized, “Despite attempts to discredit London, the statistics paint a different picture.”
London recorded its lowest murder rate per capita in history last year, with fewer murders of individuals under 25 than any year this century and one of the lowest homicide levels in nearly thirty years.
Khan highlighted the Metropolitan Police’s success in leveraging technology like facial recognition and targeted anti-gang operations, resulting in an additional 1,000 monthly arrests. In 2025, there were 97 homicides, an 11% decline from the previous year and the lowest figure since 2014, despite a population surge of over 500,000.
London’s homicide rate stands at 1.1 per 100,000 people, contrasting with 2.8 in New York, 3.2 in Berlin, 11.7 in Chicago, 12.3 in Philadelphia, and 1.6 in Toronto. Khan affirmed, “The outcomes speak for themselves: fewer lives lost, fewer families shattered. While every murder is tragic, we remain committed to utilizing all available resources to combat serious violence.”
Metropolitan Police detectives achieved a remarkable 95% solve rate in the previous year, indicating substantial progress in crime resolution.
Lib Peck, director of London’s violence reduction unit (VRU), underscored that despite negative portrayals, homicide levels are at unprecedented lows, with ongoing declines in violence. Peck acknowledged the need to address online misconceptions to enhance public perception of safety.
The VRU conducted over 550,000 targeted interventions last year to prevent youth involvement in gangs and violence, showcasing sustained efforts to address both criminal activity and its root causes.
Khan concluded, “Our persistent approach of being tough on crime while addressing its underlying complexities is proving effective.”
