Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations in Greater Sudbury

Emergency responders are currently addressing a natural gas leak near the intersection of Bancroft Drive and 2nd Ave. in Greater Sudbury. Authorities have detected a significant amount of natural gas emanating from sewer drains in the area. The Greater Sudbury Police and Fire Services have issued a public alert regarding the incident through social media channels earlier today.

According to a city spokesperson speaking to Radio-Canada, as a precautionary measure, 12 buildings near the gas leak location have been evacuated. The Sudbury Fire Services hazardous materials team and Enbridge, the natural gas company, are present at the scene to monitor air quality and evaluate the situation.

Due to the ongoing emergency response, Bancroft Drive has been closed to traffic at the junction of 2nd and 3rd Ave. Authorities are advising the public to steer clear of the affected area and expect traffic delays.
