Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights about her health struggles and treatment journey. The renowned Canadian singer unveiled in an exclusive feature by Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune disorder caused intense pain, with episodes so severe that it often hindered her mobility, forcing her to rely on high doses of Valium for relief.
Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that tends to worsen over time, affecting a minute percentage of the population. Its symptoms include muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause for the disorder and no approved treatment tailored specifically for it, other therapies can assist in managing the symptoms effectively.
Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would discreetly attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering. She expressed in the interview that she felt a sense of dishonesty towards her fans by not revealing the severity of her condition, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to seek comprehensive treatment.
Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining shows. Despite not performing publicly since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she is resolute in making a comeback to the stage starting in September.
Dion’s recovery routine involves a rigorous regimen comprising medication, physical therapy, vocal training, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming performances.
Described as someone who is constantly in motion and hesitant to stay still for fear of experiencing stiffness again, Dion considers her recovery and the opportunity to perform once more as a miraculous gift that she deeply appreciates. She emphasized the importance of gratitude and readiness for her return to the stage, conveying a mix of excitement and nervousness. Her Paris residency, scheduled between September 12 and May 29 next year, comprises 26 concerts.
Through her resilience and determination, Dion is poised to make a triumphant return to the spotlight, showcasing her unwavering commitment to her artistry and her loyal fan base.
