Grace Stelmachowicz, a resident of Squamish, B.C., shared her personal journey with CBC’s First Person. She reflects on her upbringing where the conventional path to success was emphasized – pursuing higher education, securing a job in one’s field, getting married, buying a house, and having children. This narrative was ingrained by her parents and guidance counselor, shaping her aspirations as she neared the end of her second year studying biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph in 2016.
Despite aiming for a summer engineering position to enhance her resume, Grace unexpectedly landed a job at a horseback riding facility in Banff National Park. This deviation from her planned trajectory led her to rediscover her childhood passion for horseback riding on the rugged terrain of the Rockies. Guiding guests through picturesque landscapes and immersing herself in the beauty of nature reshaped her perspective on what constitutes a fulfilling life beyond traditional career paths.
Her experience in seasonal work not only exposed her to breathtaking surroundings but also introduced her to a diverse community of like-minded individuals.
