“French Islands Compete in Newfoundland Summer Games”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games feature representatives from 10 different regions, including the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, turning the provincial event into an international competition. Both boys and girls soccer teams from St. Pierre and Miquelon participated in the Games held in Corner Brook.

The boys’ soccer team kicked off their tournament with a match against Team Eastern, losing 1-0. Soccer holds significant importance in St. Pierre, and players relish the opportunity to compete in Newfoundland, broadening their horizons and gaining valuable experience.

Arthur Champdoizeau, a 15-year-old player, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We don’t face much competition in St. Pierre, so coming to Corner Brook for the N.L. Games is a fantastic opportunity for us and my team.”

Antony Cronsteadt, 14, highlighted the unique nature of the tournament, mentioning that St. Pierre and Miquelon have three youth soccer teams that united for this competition, offering them a new and exciting playing experience.

Team manager Guillaume Grasset emphasized the importance of events like the N.L. Games in player development, fostering new friendships, and creating unforgettable memories beyond their island.

The Games’ closing ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, providing a fitting conclusion to the sporting event. View the players in action and hear their stories in the video shared above.
