Ontario Premier Doug Ford has encouraged Ontario board chairs to prioritize local businesses over American counterparts following recent tariff increases. Ford emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses amid escalating trade tensions in a memo posted on social media platform X.
A recent survey by Liaison Strategies revealed a surge in approval ratings for Ford and his Progressive Conservatives, giving them a four-point lead over the Ontario Liberals among decided and leaning voters. The survey, conducted among 1,500 Ontarians from Aug. 23 to 24, coincided with the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods by the U.S.
Trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada broke down, leading to retaliatory tariffs imposed by both countries. Despite Ford’s approval rating rising by 12 points, a majority of survey respondents still disapprove of his performance as premier, according to David Valentin, principal at Liaison Strategies.
The survey also indicated strong public support for retaliatory measures against the U.S., with a high percentage backing Canadian tariffs on American goods and advocating for restrictions on U.S. alcohol sales in Ontario until a trade agreement is reached.
Ford has faced criticism and controversies, including a recent hotel expense scandal involving Toronto-area PC caucus members. Despite ongoing challenges, Ford remains resolute in his efforts to protect Ontario businesses and workers from the impacts of tariffs and trade disputes.
