Edmonton Offers Online Map to Locate Public Washrooms
Edmonton residents seeking public washrooms can now utilize an online map to find the nearest facilities. The city maintains approximately 160 washrooms, primarily situated in parks, recreation centers, transit stations, and libraries, a notable increase from 115 facilities in 2016, reflecting a rise of around 40% as the city’s population grew by about 30% over the past decade.
The map highlights the concentration of public washrooms in downtown areas and near the river valley, with some neighborhoods, especially those farther from downtown, having limited or no city-managed facilities. Landis Reichle, director of the Big Lakes community league in northwest Edmonton, mentioned that the secluded nature of their area sacrifices convenience, necessitating solutions to address the lack of nearby washrooms.
To bridge the gap, the city introduced a $5,000 grant program for businesses and organizations to offer washrooms for non-paying customers. Since its inception in 2023, 35 entities have received grants totaling $175,000, with the Big Lakes community league using the funds to install portable toilets for community events this summer.
In 2024, Edmonton released a comprehensive strategy report focusing on enhancing washroom access, cleanliness, safety, and new construction locations. The report revealed that 72% of respondents felt there were insufficient public washrooms in the city, with 53% citing concerns about cleanliness and safety as reasons for infrequent usage of existing facilities.
Public washrooms play a crucial role in urban life, as emphasized by Lezlie Lowe, author of “No Place to Go: How Public Toilets Fail Our Private Needs.” Lowe stressed the importance of accessible washrooms, noting their significance in daily activities and mobility within the city. Despite the negative perceptions associated with public washrooms, efforts are underway to enhance their accessibility and inclusivity across Edmonton, including the construction of new permanent facilities with universal design features to cater to diverse user needs.
