Expressing her firm stance against funding transphobia, Pankiw emphasized the ease of her decision in the Instagram post. She clarified that her refusal was specifically for a directing position, not acting.
Having directed episodes for acclaimed series like “Black Mirror” and “Feel Good,” as well as the film “I Used to be Funny,” Pankiw, aged 39, has an established career in the industry. The text exchange, dated April 21, did not disclose the identity of the person she was conversing with.
The new “Harry Potter” series, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” is scheduled for release on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. Based on J.K. Rowling’s immensely popular fantasy book series, the show will stream on Crave in Canada. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues have sparked criticism in recent years, leading to divided opinions within the “Harry Potter” community and beyond.
Another filmmaker, Kate Herron, also shared her experience of turning down work on the series, expressing solidarity with Pankiw’s decision. Herron, known for directing “Loki” and other popular series, commended Pankiw’s stance and revealed that she too declined offers to work on the “Harry Potter” project.
