Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth is set to retire, concluding a 50-year career filled with memories of comrades lost in the line of duty. Reflecting on his tenure, Dongworth recalled a tragic incident from July 1992 when firefighter Morley James perished in a blaze at the 17th Avenue Inn. The poignant memory of that night lingers with Dongworth, particularly as James valiantly searched for survivors before succumbing to the flames.
Having served as Calgary’s fire chief for the past 11 years, Dongworth, now 69, began his firefighting journey in the United Kingdom before relocating to Canada in the 1990s. Recently, Mayor Jeromy Farkas honored Dongworth’s five decades of service during a Calgary Stampede event.
Dongworth’s career trajectory was unexpected, as he initially considered following in his family’s military footsteps. However, a fortuitous encounter led him to join the fire department at 19, kickstarting his lifelong dedication to firefighting.
