Since the accessible change table has been missing for half a year, Letto now prepares her son before boarding by changing his diaper on land. This situation poses risks, especially in rough seas, where changing without the table could lead to injuries for both of them. Letto expressed her concerns about the prolonged delay in addressing this issue, emphasizing the challenges faced by her son during their travels.
Despite Letto’s attempts to communicate the problem to the ferry’s owner, Labrador Marine Inc., there has been no response. However, the company’s general manager, Austin Daley, assured that an adult change table has been ordered and is expected to arrive by September 30. While not mandatory by transportation regulations, the company acknowledges the importance of this amenity for passengers with disabilities.
In response to the situation, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has confirmed the commitment to ensuring the ferry provides an accessible change table. Letto highlighted the discrepancy in accessibility standards between different transportation services and facilities, advocating for better accommodations for individuals with special needs. She aims to continue advocating for her son’s access to essential services and spaces to meet his requirements.
