Fatal Pursuit: Quebec Police Investigation Underway

Quebec’s autonomous police oversight body is examining a case where a pursuit by three distinct law enforcement agencies led to gunshots being fired and a fatality near Lévis during the night. The incident unfolded after reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Highway 20 towards the Pierre-Laporte Bridge around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, prompting a police chase.

Lévis police collaborated with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) during the event. The suspect’s vehicle collided head-on with another southbound vehicle, resulting in shots being discharged and causing injuries from two bullets. Subsequently, the suspect fled in a stolen vehicle but was later apprehended at Lallemand Road and Guillaume-Couture Boulevard in Lévis. A security perimeter remained in place until 5 a.m. on Saturday, with the SQ’s tactical team also on-site.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) disclosed via email to Radio-Canada that it is probing the incident involving SQ, Quebec City police, and Lévis police. The injured person is reportedly in stable condition, while one individual succumbed to the situation. Seven BEI investigators have been assigned to delve into the circumstances of the intervention. In parallel, Montreal police are conducting their own inquiry into the events before the police involvement. The BEI is seeking witnesses to come forward and provide information through their website.
