E-scooter accidents leading to serious injuries are on the rise in the Waterloo region as the popularity of these devices grows. Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) reports three e-scooter collisions resulting in serious injuries this year, compared to one last year. The total reported e-scooter collisions for this year stand at 22, slightly lower than the 28 collisions reported last year.
WRPS highlights that a major factor contributing to e-scooter accidents is the unauthorized modifications made to the devices, allowing them to exceed the legal speed limits set by the provincial regulations of the Highway Traffic Act. Staff Sgt. Scott Metcalfe of WRPS emphasized this issue in a statement to CBC News.
A recent incident involved a 19-year-old man from Kitchener who sustained serious injuries after being hit by an SUV while riding an e-scooter in July. A report from the Region of Waterloo in March revealed an increase in ambulance trips involving e-scooter users, suggesting a rise in personal e-scooter usage.
E-scooters in Ontario are required to adhere to a speed limit of 24 km/h on roads, bike lanes, and trails, and are prohibited on controlled-access highways. Helmet use is mandatory for all users. Some accidents involve riders under 16, contravening provincial regulations. Metcalfe noted that younger riders may lack the experience and awareness needed for road safety.
WRPS recently issued a warning to e-scooter users to comply with road regulations after a video surfaced of an e-scooter being driven on the Conestoga Expressway. Metcalfe emphasized the importance of maintaining visibility, being aware of surroundings, and establishing eye contact with other road users for safe riding practices.
Local bylaws dictate where e-scooters are permitted to operate in the Waterloo region, varying by township or city. Metcalfe advised e-scooter users to consult their local municipality’s website for specific rules on e-scooter usage.
