“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Legacy Lives On”

Dolly Parton generously provided countless free books to children worldwide through her Imagination Library, a program she considered a great honor to support, as stated by Chaya Kulkarni, a member of the book selection committee. Kulkarni, also the director of infant and early mental health promotion at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, emphasized that Parton’s initiative, which has impacted millions of children globally, was deeply rooted in her personal experiences and childhood.

The recent passing of Parton at the age of 80 has prompted widespread tributes recognizing her as a country music and pop culture icon, as well as a philanthropist. Since its inception in 1995, the Imagination Library has distributed over 300 million books worldwide, including five million books in Canada and 730,595 books in 2025 alone. Eligible children receive a free book monthly until they reach five years of age.

Parton established the Imagination Library in memory of her father, who faced literacy challenges. In a statement in 2020, she expressed immense pride in the program, equating it to one of her life’s greatest achievements. Following her demise, Parton’s family suggested donations to the Imagination Library in lieu of flowers, with assurances from the program that book distributions will continue.

Kulkarni shared insights with Ormiston on the operational aspects of the program and the families benefiting from it in Canada and globally. Communities must collectively fund the program, allowing families to register for monthly book deliveries starting from infancy. The books, carefully selected for developmental and cultural relevance, include works by Canadian authors and illustrators, as well as stories reflecting Indigenous perspectives.

Parton’s genuine connection with children was evident during program events, where her animated storytelling captivated young audiences. Families can access recordings of Parton narrating stories, further strengthening her bond with children. Her legacy of fostering a love for reading among millions of children stands out as a lasting gift, leaving a profound impact on generations to come.
