Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has addressed concerns raised about Jannik Sinner’s doping case and subsequent suspension in early 2025. The Italian player accepted a three-month ban following two positive drug tests in 2024.
Initially, Sinner escaped punishment as an investigation found that the failed tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, were due to contamination during a massage by his fitness coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was not at fault for the positive results discovered in March 2024.
In response to criticism, the ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and rebuffed claims of favoritism. Sinner later reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency after it contested the initial decision not to suspend him.
The current world No. 2 served his three-month ban from February to May this year, strategically allowing him to participate in the French Open starting in late May. Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of that tournament and Wimbledon in July, recently shared his perspective on the situation during a comprehensive discussion with Piers Morgan.
Djokovic expressed his belief that while the controversy may fade, it will not vanish completely. He described Sinner’s character, mentioning his focus on becoming the best player he can be and his shock at the doping incident. Djokovic criticized the handling of the case, pointing out issues like lack of transparency, timing of the ban, and alleged preferential treatment.
In a separate matter, Djokovic touched on his own experience facing criticism over his stance on Covid-19 vaccination. He clarified that he has always advocated for freedom of choice and emphasized that his position was misunderstood.
