Recent protests worldwide have put the spotlight on the controversial Iranian flag. In London, a demonstrator scaled the balcony of the Iranian embassy and removed the flag, which is viewed as a symbol of the oppressive regime.
Meanwhile, on the social media platform X, the official flag of the Islamic Republic was replaced with the pre-revolutionary Lion-and-Sun flag, a move that aligns with the symbol’s resurgence in Iran as a form of protest against the current regime.
The alteration on X involved replacing the emblem introduced after the 1979 Islamic Revolution with the traditional Lion-and-Sun motif that historically adorned Iranian flags. This change affected all accounts associated with Iran, including those linked to the state.
Following a user’s request to modify the Iranian flag emoji, Nikita Bear, X’s head of product, along with Elon Musk, initiated the change process. Bear confirmed the update was underway, and it was implemented the next day.
During an anti-regime protest in London, a protester at the Iranian embassy removed the national flag. The Metropolitan Police estimated that around 500 to 1,000 individuals participated in the demonstration in Kensington.
Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, emphasized the importance of protecting individuals who speak out against the Iranian government. Cooper highlighted the need for fundamental rights like free speech and peaceful assembly without the fear of violence or retaliation.
Cooper stated, “The joint statement by the UK, France, and Germany underscores the call for the Iranian authorities to heed our concerns and uphold these essential rights.”
