“Canada World Cup Star Eustaquio Joins Swansea City”

Stephen Eustaquio swiftly embraced the opportunity to join Swansea City following his recent success in helping Canada advance to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. The midfielder, now 29 years old, was enticed by the prospect of aiding the Welsh club in their quest to return to the Premier League, particularly due to the chance to work again with a familiar coach.

On Thursday, Swansea officially announced the signing of Eustaquio from Porto, sealing a two-year deal with an additional season option. Eustaquio expressed his enthusiasm about reuniting with head coach Vitor Matos, who had previously been associated with Porto, emphasizing the pivotal role this connection played in his decision.

“The decision to join Swansea was an easy one for me,” Eustaquio conveyed in a statement from the club. “I have a clear understanding of what to expect here, and I am delighted with my choice.” Swansea concluded the previous Championship season in 11th place, falling well short of the promotion playoff spots, and Eustaquio acknowledges the challenging path ahead in their bid for Premier League return.

“The allure of contributing to a prominent club aiming for top-flight football was the primary draw for me,” he remarked. “Though the journey will be tough, approaching each game with focus could lead to an exciting atmosphere in the stadium and potentially a remarkable season. Anything is possible.” Originally from Leamington, Ontario, Eustaquio relocated to Portugal during his childhood. Prior to his tenure at Porto, he featured for Chaves in Portugal and Cruz Azul in Mexico.

During his time at Porto, spanning over four years, Eustaquio amassed more than 150 appearances. He also briefly joined Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC on loan earlier this year. With 61 caps for Canada, Eustaquio has represented his country in the last two World Cups, including the recent tournament where he scored a crucial stoppage-time goal in Canada’s victory over South Africa in the Round of 32.

Reflecting on the tournament, Eustaquio expressed his elation, stating, “This summer was extraordinary. It was a dream come true for us as a nation to achieve such progress in a remarkable competition.” He further highlighted the significance of breaking records and his joy in contributing to the team’s success. Eustaquio is set to don the No. 46 jersey for Swansea and is poised to make his debut potentially this weekend against Derby County.
