“Canada and Ukraine Forge Historic Defense Pact”

Canada and Ukraine solidified their partnership through the signing of a comprehensive long-term agreement focusing on defense and security, trade and investment, as well as energy and critical minerals. This pact sets the stage for the joint production of drones to safeguard the interests of both nations.

Under this 100-year partnership, the two countries initiated the collaboration with a series of contracts related to drone manufacturing and defense industry investments. Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the pivotal moment in Ukraine’s conflict with advancements in its unmanned systems penetrating deep into Russian territory.

Acknowledging the devastating impact of Russia’s intensified missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, particularly on the capital city Kyiv, Carney emphasized Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s cause of freedom, democracy, and sovereignty.

Taking inspiration from Ukraine’s wartime practices, Canada aims to establish its drone marketplace, enabling military units to swiftly engage with companies to meet their operational requirements. Carney outlined plans to enhance industrial capacity for producing millions of drones within the next two years, a significant leap from the current inventory of 2,000 drones in the Canadian military.

Furthermore, Canada has awarded contracts worth up to $50 million to bolster the Canadian Armed Forces’ drone capabilities, aiming to procure various types of drones and uncrewed ground vehicles from six firms across different provinces. In addition, a partnership between General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada and Ukrainian company Green Tech Harvest will drive the development and production of drones and related technologies.

The strategic partnership between Canada and Ukraine also encompasses joint efforts in producing uncrewed systems, counter-drone technologies, munitions, and artificial intelligence. Carney and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of this collaboration, which extends beyond defense to energy security and critical minerals.

As part of the agreement, Canada pledged substantial investments in Ukraine’s defense and long-term security, including funding for air defense interceptors, energy security support, and rehabilitation programs for Ukrainian veterans and their families.

The rapid evolution of drone technology poses a challenge for both nations, with the need for continuous adaptation and innovation. Lt.-Gen. Darcy Molstad highlighted Ukraine’s expertise in drone technology, emphasizing the importance of learning from their operational experiences.

In summary, the Canada-Ukraine partnership signifies a deepening bond between the two nations, driven by shared values and mutual interests in enhancing defense capabilities and ensuring long-term security and stability.
