California Governor Gavin Newsom predicts that internal pressure within the Republican Party will compel President Donald Trump to resume negotiations with Canada. Newsom mentioned in an interview with CBC News that Trump is facing significant criticism and opposition from his own party. This development comes at a crucial juncture, with the upcoming U.S. midterm elections posing a test to Trump’s leadership as Republicans risk losing their majority in the Senate and House of Representatives.
Recent trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. hit an impasse, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend negotiations. Shortly after, Trump initiated new tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods. Newsom emphasized his belief that Trump cannot afford to prolong the pause in negotiations and expects him to return to the bargaining table within a matter of days or at most a few weeks.
Expressing California’s stance, Newsom condemned Trump’s actions towards Canada, stating, “We do not in any way, shape, or form condone the behavior of this president as it relates to how he’s treated you.” The ongoing trade war has had severe repercussions on California, particularly affecting the state’s wine industry, which has faced challenges such as being excluded from various provinces’ shelves for over a year. California wine exports to Canada experienced a significant decline of $343 million between 2024 and 2025, as per the U.S. Census Bureau data.
In response to Barton’s inquiry about potential animosity from California wine producers towards Canada, Newsom acknowledged such sentiments, attributing the situation to Trump’s policies. He described the ordeal as “painful” and stressed that California should not be held accountable for the actions of the current administration. Newsom commended Carney for his resolute approach towards Trump, noting that the president values strength and does not respond well to weakness.
While Newsom is not seeking re-election as California’s governor, speculations suggest he may consider a presidential bid in 2028 as a Democratic candidate. Regarding his stance against Trump’s tariffs and any potential political ambitions, Newsom clarified that his actions are not motivated by personal aspirations. He remained open to the idea of running for higher office, acknowledging the role of fate in such decisions.
