“Beloved Series ‘North of North’ Returns for Frosty Season 2”

Get ready for another chilly adventure as the beloved series, North of North, returns to the frosty landscapes of Ice Cove for its highly anticipated Season 2.

Following the story of Siaja (portrayed by Anna Lambe), a resilient young Inuk woman navigating life post a very public breakup, the show, a collaboration between APTN, CBC, and Netflix, has garnered widespread acclaim. Season 1 captivated audiences worldwide, securing a spot in Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and earning accolades for its adept blend of humor and poignant themes.

“We cherish comedy that tugs at the heartstrings. Laughter is key, but we also value moments that evoke tears,” shared Stacey Aglok MacDonald, co-creator and executive producer, with CBC News.

The series has also clinched multiple awards, including nine Canadian Screen Awards, with highlights such as best comedy series and best lead performer in a comedy going to Lambe.

Reflecting on the unexpected success, co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril expressed their astonishment at the show’s massive reception. MacDonald echoed this sentiment, stating, “We were overjoyed by the whole experience.”

In Season 2, viewers are reunited with Siaja as she grapples with the complexities of motherhood, a demanding job, and the challenges of dating while navigating intricate relationships with her mother, Neevee (played by Maika Harper), and her estranged father, Alistair (portrayed by Jay Ryan).

The season kicks off with Siaja processing her mother’s revelation about an older sister, setting the stage for a journey of self-discovery amidst turmoil. Rooted in the Inuktitut principle of ᐱᓕᒻᒪᒃᓴᕐᓂᖅ (pilimmaksarniq) — mastering skills through observation, practice, and perseverance — Siaja’s life descends into chaos, leading to raw and emotional moments with her mother.

Meanwhile, Neevee, initially portrayed as guarded, begins to open up, signaling a shift in their dynamic. As Siaja navigates the delicate balance between honoring her mother’s wishes and seeking familial connections, tensions rise, and relationships evolve.

Season 2 of North of North showcases Iqaluit’s picturesque backdrop, serving as the fictional setting for Ice Cove once again. Production in the Arctic terrain, with its harsh conditions, adds a layer of authenticity and enchantment to the show.

Emphasizing the importance of community involvement, the creators underscore the significance of incorporating Inuit perspectives in every aspect of production. From fashion choices inspired by diverse Inuit styles to the challenges of coordinating handcrafted pieces, the show strives for authenticity in depicting Arctic culture.

As the new season unfolds, fans can anticipate a whirlwind of unexpected plot twists, new characters, and deeper explorations into the lives of familiar faces. Promising a blend of humor and heart, Season 2 aims to exceed expectations with bigger and bolder storytelling.

Featuring returning cast members alongside guest appearances from notable figures like Bruce McCulloch and Elisapie, North of North Season 2 is set to premiere in Canada on Sept. 1 on APTN+, followed by a broader release on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and APTN TV on Sept. 8. Global audiences can catch the season on Netflix later this fall, continuing the icy escapades of Siaja and her community.
