A bail hearing for a man who allegedly issued a bomb threat against the U.S. Consulate in Halifax was postponed for the third time on Friday. Ali Assakereh, a resident of Halifax, was arrested and charged with making threats and causing public mischief after authorities claimed he parked his vehicle near the consulate with a propane tank and flammable liquids.
During the hearing, Assakereh’s legal representative, Lonny Queripel, mentioned uncertainty regarding potential additional charges against his client. The lawyer highlighted the challenges in seeking bail due to an ongoing police inquiry, as Assakereh, facing minor charges, has been in custody since his apprehension on Monday.
The 54-year-old suspect, hailing from Iran, was present at the Halifax provincial courthouse but remained confined during the brief court session. Provincial court Judge Del Atwood approved Queripel’s request for a postponement until August 19.
