An ordinary-looking grandmother shocked the world by committing a heinous crime, first killing her husband and then another woman to steal her identity. Lois Ann Riess, known as the “Killer Grandma,” triggered a nationwide manhunt in 2018 after disappearing from her Minnesota home following the discovery of her husband’s body with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities suspected foul play and identified Lois as the main suspect, revealing that she had forged her husband’s signature, emptied his accounts, and fled south due to a gambling addiction.
Upon reaching Fort Myers Beach, Riess befriended Pamela Hutchinson, a woman resembling her in age and appearance, with the intention of stealing her identity. Hutchinson unknowingly socialized with Riess, who later killed her in a holiday condo. Riess then took Hutchinson’s personal belongings and car to evade law enforcement across different states.
Described as a calculated crime by Florida investigators, Riess was eventually apprehended in Texas after being spotted gambling and staying in hotels using Hutchinson’s identity. Following her arrest, Riess confessed to both murders. She received a life sentence in Florida for Hutchinson’s murder and identity theft before being extradited to Minnesota, where she pleaded guilty to killing her husband and received a second life sentence.
During court proceedings, Riess’s children expressed their emotional turmoil caused by her actions. Despite Riess attributing her crimes to a “psychotic break” due to gambling addiction and mental health issues, prosecutors and media professionals remain skeptical of her claims.
