“TV Licence Fee to Rise Above £180 in 2022”

The upcoming year is expected to see an increase in the TV licence fee, potentially exceeding £180, adding to the financial burden on many households. The government determines the TV licence fee, usually raising it annually in April to align with the previous September’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate.

With the September inflation rate confirmed at 3.8% this year, the current cost of a TV licence stands at £174.50 per year. If the fee increases by 3.8% next April, the new cost for a color licence would surpass £181.

Although the exact increment remains unconfirmed by the government, approximately 300,000 households ceased paying their TV licence fee last year. It is essential to hold a TV licence for legally viewing live TV content, including catch-up and live shows on platforms like BBC iPlayer. Notably, a TV licence is not required for streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5 unless watching live broadcasts through these services.

Certain individuals qualify for free or discounted TV licences, such as those aged 75 or older receiving Pension Credit. Eligibility for refunds or concessions varies based on circumstances, including residence in care facilities, visual impairment, or student status away from home. Failure to possess a necessary TV licence can result in fines, with penalties reaching up to £1,000, or higher in certain regions, along with potential legal costs.
