Skydance-owned Paramount has successfully concluded its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for $81 billion in the United States. The merger, completed on Tuesday, has led to the formation of a new powerhouse in Hollywood known simply as “Skydance.” This union merges two of America’s most historic movie studios and brings together a diverse range of content, including popular titles like “Harry Potter,” “Sinners,” and networks such as CNN, all now under the same umbrella as Paramount+, CBS, “Top Gun,” and “The Godfather.”
Billionaire David Ellison, alongside new co-CEO Ynon Kreiz, formerly of Mattel, will now oversee all these entities, consolidating power in an industry dominated by a few major players. In Canada, plans are in motion to potentially merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming service, although current arrangements with Bell Media, Rogers, and Corus for exclusive content distribution are expected to remain unchanged for several years.
While consolidation of streaming services is on the horizon in the U.S., the practicality of such a move in Canada remains uncertain due to the size of the market. As streaming service accessibility stays stable, consumers may face price increases as companies strive for profitability and manage debt obligations.
As a settlement clause following opposition to the merger, Paramount has committed to releasing a minimum of 30 films annually for the next two years, with a subsequent increase to 32 films per year for the following three years, of which half must be produced or co-produced by the merged company. This decision, while promising for the theatrical release landscape, raises concerns for the future of independent cinema.
The increased focus on U.S. film production and cost-saving measures may have adverse effects on Canadian film industry workers, with estimates suggesting job losses in Los Angeles and potential repercussions for Canadian production. Hollywood professionals have expressed mixed reactions to the merger, with concerns raised regarding job opportunities and content diversity.
The relationship between the new entity and CNN, particularly under the scrutiny of U.S. President Donald Trump, has attracted attention. Promises of editorial independence have been made, but skepticism remains, given past turmoil under Skydance ownership. Despite assurances, uncertainties persist over the implications of the merger on media editorial practices. Trump’s association with the Ellison family has also drawn interest, highlighting the interconnectedness of business and politics in the entertainment industry.
