“72-Year-Old Man Dies in Three-Vehicle Crash on P.E.I. Route”

A 72-year-old man from Queens County passed away on Monday following a three-vehicle crash in Springvale, P.E.I. The incident occurred on Route 2 close to Colville Road, approximately 16 kilometers west of Charlottetown, with Queens District RCMP arriving at the scene around 1:30 p.m.

According to Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for P.E.I. RCMP, initial reports suggest that a car collided with a transport truck, rear-ended it, and then veered into oncoming traffic, where it struck a tow truck. The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries later on.

Fortunately, the individuals in the tractor-trailer and tow truck sustained minor injuries. Authorities have ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors in the accident, although an investigation is currently underway.

Emergency services including Island EMS, the North River Fire Department, and the Department of Transportation responded promptly to the scene. Cpl. Moore highlighted that there have been 10 fatal motor vehicle accidents on P.E.I. this year, matching the same figure from the previous year.

He emphasized that incidents involving vehicles crossing the center line have been particularly significant this year, posing increased risks to all road users. Moore underscored the importance of raising public awareness about the types of crashes occurring and noted the advancements in newer vehicle safety technologies like lane-keeping assist and collision warning systems. He stressed that older vehicles lack many of these modern safety features, making them less equipped to prevent accidents.
