Team Canada’s women’s wheelchair basketball squad kicked off their journey at the World Championships in Ottawa with an impressive win against Spain. The team, led by Arinn Young’s 18 points and Kady Dandeneau’s double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds, secured a commanding 76-51 victory at TD Place.
Despite a slow start that saw them trailing 21-15 after the first quarter, Canada rallied back to dominate the game, sealing the win before the final quarter.

“We were initially nervous in front of our home crowd,” Young remarked on the team’s slow start. “But we quickly identified the issue, acknowledged our feelings, and regained our composure.”
Later in the day, the Canadian men secured a win over Morocco with a 74-51 victory. Colin Higgins led the charge with an impressive performance, nearly achieving a triple-double with 24 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists, contributing significantly to Canada’s 40 points in the paint.
Spain, entering the tournament as three-time European championship bronze medalists and finishing eighth at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, presented a tough challenge for Canada, who landed in fourth place at the same event.
