“Future of Yukon’s Whitehorse Emergency Shelter in Limbo”

Yukon’s Official Opposition leader is urging the territorial government to provide a prompt update regarding the future of the Whitehorse Emergency Shelter. As the current shelter operator’s contract is set to expire in less than a week, uncertainty looms over who will take over the shelter’s management.

The downtown shelter plays a crucial role in assisting some of the most vulnerable individuals during challenging times, although it has been surrounded by controversy for an extended period. Despite the existence of an advisory committee tasked with outlining the shelter’s future direction, no official recommendations have been disclosed yet.

Yukon NDP Leader Kate White recently reached out to the health minister, expressing concerns about the lack of information regarding the continuity of food and shelter services at 405 Alexander St. Questions about potential changes in operations, staffing levels, and program management remain unanswered, prompting White to emphasize the absence of progress in initiating a competitive process to identify a new shelter operator.

White highlighted the conspicuous silence from the Yukon government, indicating a lack of proactive steps towards securing a new operator for the shelter. Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers, who has raised issues about the current operator, Connective, and its management practices, has not responded to interview requests.

In the absence of a new operator, Cathers previously committed the government to overseeing the shelter temporarily. However, the Opposition is demanding clarity on the contingency plan if a new operator is not secured by the end of the month. White stressed the urgency of this matter, especially given the growing challenges faced by residents in accessing affordable housing and basic necessities.

The emergency shelter, originally intended as a temporary solution, has increasingly become a long-term housing option for many individuals. White emphasized the critical need for transparency and clarity on what steps will follow in the wake of the shelter’s impending transition.
