“Brazen Theft of Bronze Turtle Statue Rocks Richmond Hill Park”

A significant bronze turtle statue and four smaller statues were recently stolen from a park in Richmond Hill, prompting authorities to label the incident as a “particularly concerning” theft. The York Regional Police disclosed that the theft occurred at Lake Wilcox Park, adjacent to Bethesda Side Road. Although the theft was reported on August 12, the exact date of the incident remains unconfirmed.

Constable James Dickson expressed dismay over the theft, emphasizing that while metal theft is not uncommon, the vandalism of public art has a more severe impact as it affects the entire community. Dickson lamented the loss of these unique sculptures that were enjoyed by residents, speculating that they may have already been melted down. He urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the stolen statues or the culprits responsible to come forward.

Mayor David West of Richmond Hill issued a statement on August 18, revealing that the public art pieces were taken during the park’s closure overnight in the second week of August. West conveyed his sadness and disbelief at the theft, highlighting the significance of public art in celebrating the community’s distinct spaces and diverse culture. The stolen statues, which had been a beloved feature in the park for years, hold sentimental value for the community, according to the mayor. West expressed hope for the safe return of the artwork to the people of Richmond Hill.

The bronze turtle statue, crafted by artist Steve Worthington and displayed on a raised platform, was among the stolen sculptures. Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information or video footage related to the theft to reach out to the police for assistance.
