Israel is currently seeking approval from the United States to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, according to Defence Minister Israel Katz. This move, criticized as forced displacement and ethnic cleansing, involves facilitating the “voluntary emigration” of Palestinians in Gaza through various means. However, many Palestinians in Gaza have expressed opposition to the idea, fearing it may lead to their forced removal.
Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli National Security Minister and leader of the far-right Jewish Power party, is expected to unveil a plan named “Disengagement 710” on Thursday. This plan, which aims to remove Palestinians over a seven-year period, is part of Ben-Gvir’s campaign strategy for the upcoming legislative elections in October.
Pending approval from the United States, Katz emphasized the necessity of the relocation, citing the need to find other countries willing to accept the Palestinians. He stated that the Israeli government is prepared to assist in the emigration process by any means necessary, including by sea or air.
The proposal comes after the 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel, which resulted in significant casualties and hostage situations. Subsequently, Israel launched an offensive in Gaza, causing extensive destruction and casualties. Despite previous suggestions by U.S. President Donald Trump to displace Gaza residents, recent peace plans do not include such provisions.
The United Nations has condemned any forced relocation of Palestinians, emphasizing that it violates international law and undermines the right to self-determination. Reports suggest ongoing concerns about ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank, with many Palestinians refusing to leave their homes despite difficult conditions.
Some residents in Gaza have expressed a desire to leave due to the challenging living conditions, while others remain steadfast in their commitment to staying in their homeland. Israeli forces maintain control over a significant portion of Gaza, leading to continued hardships for the local population.
The latest peace plans between Israel and Hamas do not call for Palestinians’ displacement, with conditions set for a phased Israeli withdrawal. However, ongoing tensions and conflicts persist in the region, with calls for a resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of all parties involved.
