“Max Scherzer Makes MLB History with 9th All-Time Strikeout”

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer climbed to ninth place on the all-time strikeout leaderboard, surpassing Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry. With a stellar performance, Scherzer achieved this milestone by striking out Seattle Mariners’ Cal Raleigh in the seventh inning, marking his 3,535th career strikeout.

The enthusiastic 42,039 fans at the stadium erupted into a standing ovation as Scherzer’s record-breaking moment was highlighted on the scoreboard. Expressing his gratitude, Scherzer acknowledged the significance of advancing in the top 10 all-time strikeout list and cherished the support from his teammates and fans.

In a standout game, Scherzer notched a season-high of 10 strikeouts, a feat he accomplished for the 115th time in his career, surpassing his previous high of five strikeouts in a game. He dominated the match by allowing only one hit over seven innings, securing his first win since the season opener against Colorado on March 31. Scherzer’s exceptional performance included throwing 97 pitches, with an impressive 67 strikes.

Making history, Scherzer, at 42 years old, became only the third pitcher in MLB history aged 42 or older to pitch seven or more innings, strike out 10 or more batters, and allow two or fewer baserunners in a single game. Manager John Schneider praised Scherzer’s performance as reminiscent of his prime, labeling it as “vintage Max.”

Throughout the game, Scherzer showcased his prowess, striking out key batters like Josh Naylor and displaying impeccable control over his pitches. Mariners manager Dan Wilson acknowledged the challenge of facing Scherzer’s diverse pitching arsenal that kept the Mariners’ hitters off balance.

Earlier in the month, Scherzer surpassed another legend, Walter Johnson, to claim the 10th spot on the all-time strikeout list by striking out Kyle Schwarber. With former teammate Justin Verlander occupying the eighth position, Scherzer stands as the second active pitcher in the top 10 list.

Debuting in 2008 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Scherzer has left an indelible mark in baseball, earning eight All-Star selections and clinching two World Series titles. His illustrious career has seen him play for various teams, including Detroit, Washington, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets, and Texas.
