Last week, a significant influx of 72,000 migrants reportedly arrived in Ceuta, a small Spanish territory in North Africa, following online rumors originating from Morocco. Tragically, approximately 142 migrants lost their lives at the border due to drowning or stampedes. Most of the migrants voluntarily departed within two days, leaving behind a political crisis for Spain’s pro-immigration government amidst intensifying anti-immigration sentiments within the European Union focusing on border security. Questions persist about the circumstances leading to this event and assigning responsibility.
Aitor Hernandez-Morales, currently based in Brussels, Belgium, has been closely monitoring and reporting on the political aftermath for Politico over the past week.
