Tragic Loss: Moroccan Mother Identifies Daughter’s Body by Necklace

Jamila Afelom, a mother from Morocco, emotionally recounted how she identified her daughter Fatin Ben Homar Azizi’s body solely by a necklace she had given her before her ill-fated attempt to swim from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Afelom, a cemetery worker, found Fatin’s body in a hospital, confirming the tragic news a day and a half after the incident.

Fatin, a bold and soccer-loving 26-year-old, was described by her mother as determined and boyish. Despite her mother’s efforts to deter her from risky migration routes, Fatin was resolute about seeking a better future in Europe. Tragically, Fatin lost her life in the attempt to reach Ceuta, leaving her family devastated and mourning her loss.

Fatin’s passion for soccer was evident to her coach Adel El Kaab, who viewed the sport as an escape for many young girls from challenging economic circumstances. Despite warnings about the perils of irregular migration, several of El Kaab’s players, including Fatin, ventured towards Ceuta in pursuit of a brighter future.

The family’s desperate search for Fatin ended in heartbreak as her body was discovered in a hospital in Fnideq. The Moroccan human rights organization reported numerous deaths during the surge of migrants trying to reach Ceuta, highlighting the risks faced by individuals seeking a new life in Europe.

Fatin’s untimely death underscored the harsh realities of irregular migration and the challenges faced by many young Moroccans seeking better opportunities abroad. As her family mourns her loss, they continue to grapple with the fate of Fatin’s surviving siblings who made the perilous journey to Ceuta, hoping for a better future.

Despite Fatin’s aspirations to lift her family out of poverty, her tragic demise serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers and uncertainties associated with irregular migration routes. The family’s grief and the lingering impact of Fatin’s loss reflect the harsh realities faced by many seeking refuge and opportunity beyond their homeland.
