“Beware: Phone Scammers Impersonating Police in Charlottetown”

Charlottetown authorities issued a cautionary alert regarding an active phone scam where scammers are posing as police officers to illicitly acquire personal and financial details. The scammers are utilizing spoofing technology to manipulate caller IDs to show Charlottetown Police Service’s non-emergency number, 902-629-4172, as “City of Charlottetown.” Notably, the callers often claim to be “Officer Miller,” a non-existent officer, in their attempts to extract sensitive information from individuals. Residents are reminded that genuine police officers will never request personal or financial data over the phone to confirm identities. To safeguard against such scams, individuals are advised to refrain from disclosing personal, banking, or financial information during phone conversations, promptly end suspicious calls and block the numbers, if feasible, and directly contact Charlottetown police for verification. Those encountering suspicious calls are urged to report them to Charlottetown Police Services at 902-629-4172 or via P.E.I. Crime Stoppers. Additional information on fraud prevention can be accessed through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website.
