“Barkerville vs. Enchanted Forest: Roadside Attraction Showdown”

In the ongoing search for the best roadside attraction in the province, the first semifinal vote highlighted Cathedral Grove and the Othello Tunnels, both situated in provincial parks, emphasizing the natural environment and our connection to it. The second semifinal vote shifted focus to Barkerville, a historic gold rush village where visitors can experience life in the 1860s through interactive displays and demonstrations.

On the other side, the Enchanted Forest beckons with its whimsical collection of fairy-tale characters and structures nestled among the trees along Highway 1, blending treehouses, Winnie-the-Pooh replicas, and mythical creatures harmoniously.

While these attractions may not be entirely natural, they hold a special place in the hearts of many. Design professor Bonne Zabolotney from Emily Carr University noted that the appeal of kitsch lies in its ability to evoke positive and playful experiences that linger in our memories.

The matchup between Barkerville and the Enchanted Forest showcases the diversity of roadside attractions, from natural wonders to man-made recreations, catering to different audiences seeking relaxation or entertainment.

As the competition progresses, voters are tasked with deciding which attraction will advance to face Cathedral Grove in the final round. The Enchanted Forest’s owner, Blair Johnson, highlighted the uniqueness and family-friendly nature of the attraction, while Barkerville’s rich history and immersive experience were emphasized by Stewart Cawood, the manager of public programming and media.

Voting for this round continues until Wednesday, with the hope that the best roadside attraction will emerge victorious in the end.
