“Summerland Community Market Resumes After Wildfire”

Residents of Summerland, B.C., gathered for their weekly community market for the first time since the Bald Range wildfire prompted the evacuation of about 20,000 properties. The market, organized by the Rotary Club of Summerland and now in its 11th year, was originally established to support downtown businesses.

After the wildfire ravaged the area on August 7, destroying approximately 150 buildings, Sunday’s market marked a significant reunion for the community. Despite a reduced number of vendors, the atmosphere was uplifted with favorable weather and positive interactions among attendees, including orchardists, vintners, and ceramacists.

Dave McRae, the market director for the Rotary Club, expressed joy at seeing neighbors reconnect and people coming together. He highlighted the market as a symbol of returning to a semblance of normalcy on a Sunday in Summerland. The resilient community is optimistic about recovering from the wildfire’s aftermath.

Jennifer Taylor, a public relations director for the Rotary Club, reflected on the visible scars of the fire-damaged landscape while shopping for groceries, emphasizing that the incident will serve as a lasting memory for everyone present that night.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reported multiple new wildfires erupting across the province due to over 7,000 lightning strikes triggered by a subtropical weather system. Despite the rapid spread of fires in the southern fire centers, rainy conditions helped contain many of the blazes. However, the wildfire service cautioned about the potential reemergence of wildfires with the forecasted return of hot, dry, and windy weather, which may lead to holdover fires ignited by lightning strikes.
