As autumn approaches, many residents of Prince Edward Island are preparing to return to their studies, regardless of whether they are children, teenagers, or seniors.
The Seniors College of P.E.I. has launched its website featuring approximately 140 diverse classes, covering subjects such as art, fitness, dance, and finance.
Individuals aged 50 and above can enroll in as many courses as they wish for a yearly fee of $170.
Monique Lafontaine, a student and instructor at the seniors college, shared with host Mitch Cormier of Island Morning that the range of classes offered is so extensive that she sometimes finds herself signing up for too many.
Aside from acquiring new knowledge, Lafontaine emphasized the social aspect of joining the classes, noting the opportunity to connect with individuals they might not encounter otherwise.
She highlighted that the classes are not graded, ensuring a pressure-free learning environment. Additionally, classes often have waiting lists, allowing for easy transitions if a course does not suit a participant’s preferences.
Classes are scheduled from October to the end of May, with a break during the summer months to enable participants to enjoy the island’s summer activities.
Registration for courses opens on September 2 at 9 a.m., and early payment is recommended to secure a spot in popular classes.
Lafontaine likened the course selection process to visiting a buffet, with offerings such as LovDogs 101 and Brews and Bubblies, catering to various interests.
One of the unique classes available is Suddenly Single, designed to assist individuals in navigating the complexities following the loss of a partner.
Lafontaine, who is currently experiencing this situation, emphasized the emotional challenges and overwhelming tasks that individuals face in such circumstances.
The course aims to provide support and guidance through a series of sessions led by knowledgeable individuals.
