“Inuvik Gas Defends Rate Hike for Energy Security”

Inuvik Gas Ltd. defends its decision to raise natural gas rates, citing the necessity of ensuring a dependable energy supply for Inuvik residents. Addressing concerns raised by the N.W.T. Public Utilities Board (PUB) in a letter dated August 21, Inuvik Gas emphasized that the proposed rate increase is driven by genuine cost pressures, significant investments in energy security, and the priority of maintaining safe and reliable energy services for the Inuvik community.

Earlier in July, Inuvik Gas announced a forthcoming rate hike of $10 per gigajoule starting in September, prompting residents to request more transparency regarding the rate-setting process. Residents expressed concerns about the affordability of living in Inuvik and emphasized that heating homes is a necessity, not a luxury.

Robin Gaskell, the general manager of Inuvik Gas, reiterated that the rate adjustments are a response to escalating transportation costs for natural gas supply and recent company expansions in 2025 and 2026. The company highlighted the need for substantial investments due to declining production at the Ikhil Joint Venture and operational challenges such as delayed propane supply transport caused by road closures.

In response to inquiries about the impact of the upcoming M18 well project on costs, Inuvik Gas stated that while the project could potentially enhance future gas supply, uncertainties surrounding its timing and volume prevent the company from incorporating it into current planning. Gaskell emphasized the importance of evaluating rate requirements based on existing and foreseeable expenses rather than speculative future developments.

While Inuvik Gas anticipates additional costs in integrating the M18 well into its system, the company assured that any significant cost reductions resulting from the project would be factored into future rate assessments. The rate hike proposal is aimed at recovering essential costs for natural gas supply and generating modest shareholder returns, with the effective date set for September 1.

In the event of a delay in the PUB decision-making process, Inuvik Gas has requested an interim rate increase to commence in September until a final decision is reached. The company has pledged to refund any excess charges if the rate hike is ultimately denied.
