“Innovative Cave Radio Tech Saves Trapped Spelunker”

A spelunker was successfully rescued following an incident at Rat’s Nest Cave in Canmore, Alberta, utilizing innovative underground radio technology developed by volunteers. Search and Rescue Alberta reported that the individual became stuck in a tight area known as the “Psych Squeeze” on Saturday morning. The Alberta/BC Cave Rescue team was called in, employing hammer drills to dislodge rocks and extricate the caver slowly and meticulously.

After a painstaking operation lasting until 10 p.m., the man was finally freed and emerged from the cave around midnight. The rescue effort involved 13 cave rescuers, 10 firefighters, and two Kananaskis Mountain rescue members. Notably, a cave radio system named QDX-M, capable of transmitting signals through solid rock for over 500 meters, was utilized in a live operation for the first time.

This technology, developed by members of Alberta/BC Cave Rescue, addresses the challenges of traditional communication methods underground, like phones, radios, or GPS. The new radios are described as smaller and lighter than analog cave radios, offering reliable text-based communication deep within caves or between different cave locations.

According to Search and Rescue Alberta, the cave radio system using QDX-M technology has been a significant advancement, as commercially available units are currently not cost-effective. John Alexander, CEO of Search and Rescue Alberta, commended the collaborative effort of multiple emergency response agencies in the Rat’s Nest rescue, highlighting the innovation and dedication of volunteer search and rescue professionals in overcoming obstacles to save lives.
