The petition initiator, Rebecca Taggart, a parent of two children attending the school, emphasized the potential catastrophic consequences of such incidents, stating that it is every parent’s and school’s worst nightmare. The petition advocates for the installation of bollards along the sidewalk bordering the play yard and proposes the temporary relocation of the play area to the rear of the school building until new safety measures are implemented.
The vehicle collided with the fence on August 6, ending up in the area where younger students typically engage in recess activities. Emergency responders indicated that the elderly driver might have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash and was subsequently transported to the hospital in stable condition. Fortunately, the incident occurred when classes were not in session, and there were no other injuries reported.
Local politicians, including Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine and College ward Councillor Laine Johnson, have shown support for the safety concerns raised by the parents. Efforts are underway to find cost-effective solutions to enhance safety measures, such as improved signage and potential roadway modifications to prevent similar incidents in the future.
