Sokvin Vann found herself stuck in a rut almost four years ago until her brother suggested she channel her passion for K-pop and BTS into something positive. Acting on his advice, Vann established BTS Army Toronto, a local fan club that brings fans together through various activities and events centered around the popular South Korean boy band.
Despite facing personal tragedy with her brother’s passing shortly after founding the club, Vann persisted and expanded BTS Army Toronto into a thriving community that organizes gatherings, charitable initiatives, and advocates for supporting local Korean establishments. Now, as BTS prepares to make a highly anticipated return to Toronto after more than a decade, Vann reflects on the profound impact the fan club has had on her life.
The group is set to perform at Rogers Stadium as part of their Arirang World Tour, enthralling fans with back-to-back sold-out shows. With their chart-topping hits like “Swim,” “Permission to Dance,” and “Butter,” BTS is expected to entertain over 100,000 fans over the weekend.
Known for their passionate following, BTS fans, often referred to as the “army,” demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the band’s history, members, and music catalogue. The devotion of these fans stems from BTS’s meaningful lyrics that touch on themes such as mental health, self-care, and personal growth.
Vann commends BTS for their dedication to creating impactful music that resonates with audiences worldwide. Through her involvement with BTS Army Toronto, Vann has ventured into a new business realm with Idol Konnect, offering consulting and event planning services for K-pop artists.
The tour marks BTS’s first Canadian stop following a hiatus to fulfill mandatory military service obligations in South Korea. The group’s return to Toronto has stirred excitement not only among fans but also within the city itself, leading to the temporary renaming of a section of Yonge Street as “BTS Boulevard.”
As fans eagerly anticipate the concerts, preparations are in full swing with BTS Army Toronto setting up activities around the city and at the Toronto Korean Festival to enhance the fan experience. With a revamped stage setup at Rogers Stadium and the promise of surprise performances, the upcoming shows are expected to be unforgettable for both the fans and the band.
For Vann and many others, the concerts represent a moment of connection and gratitude within the tight-knit BTS community, fostering lasting memories and a sense of shared camaraderie.
