“Indigenous Barber Creates Community Hub in Fredericton”

Nick Paul Jr. recently launched Two Nations Barber Shop in Fredericton, situated in Sitansisk First Nation, aiming to foster community connections beyond haircuts. As an Indigenous barber from Tobique First Nation, Paul Jr. emphasizes the importance of community and belonging in his shop. His goal is to create a space where people can build relationships and feel connected.

Having worked in various barbershops in Fredericton for nearly six years, Paul Jr. saw opening his own shop as a natural progression in his career. He incorporates Indigenous practices of care into his hair cutting services and views the act of cutting hair as a significant part of Indigenous culture, representing a release of memories and energy during major life changes or losses.

Paul Jr. acknowledges the historical significance of hair cutting for Indigenous peoples, particularly those who were forced to cut their hair in residential schools. By offering his clients the choice to cut their hair as a personal decision, he believes he is contributing to the healing process. Each appointment at Two Nations Barber Shop is treated with care and respect, resembling a sacred ceremony where clients can take time for themselves.

Longtime client Ryan Harris, who also helped set up the shop, values the time spent in Paul Jr.’s chair as a moment of relaxation and self-care. Harris emphasizes the importance of prioritizing appearance and self-care in a busy world. He appreciates the dedication and attention to detail that Paul Jr. brings to each haircut, ensuring that clients leave feeling and looking their best.

The atmosphere at Two Nations Barber Shop is one of reverence and devotion, where clients can expect a personalized experience focused on enhancing their well-being. Paul Jr.’s commitment to providing exceptional service and care is evident in the satisfaction and pride his clients feel after each visit.
