A fatal accident occurred on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a driver following a head-on collision involving two SUVs. Yukon RCMP reported the incident between the Crestview area and Cousins airstrip shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Unfortunately, one driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver was taken for medical treatment.
Yukon RCMP expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy. The collision near the Cousins airstrip, located south of the North Klondike Highway intersection, prompted the closure of the highway, which later partially reopened to one lane approximately one and a half hours later. Responding to the crash site were emergency medical services, the fire department, and the territorial Department of Highways and Public Works, in addition to the Whitehorse RCMP.
By 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Yukon Protective Services confirmed that the highway had been cleared, and traffic was back to normal flow. A collision reconstructionist examined the scene, noting the involvement of a black 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and a maroon 2000 GMC Jimmy.
An investigation is currently underway, with police urging potential witnesses to come forward. Of particular interest are individuals who were present at the scene before the arrival of RCMP and left before officers collected information. These individuals may have interacted with other witnesses and could provide crucial details. The RCMP is appealing for these individuals and anyone else with relevant information or dashcam footage to assist in the investigation.
