Frank Beard, the drummer of the Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top known for providing the rhythm for hit songs like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Beard, who had been under hospice care, died on Tuesday at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family, confirmed by publicist Bob Merlis. Band co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, paid tribute to Beard in a statement.

In his tribute, Gibbons described Beard as a great friend, collaborator, and an exceptionally innovative drummer, highlighting his significant contribution to ZZ Top’s success over the past six decades. Despite the loss, Gibbons expressed the band’s commitment to continuing their musical journey as Beard had envisioned.

ZZ Top, renowned for selling over 50 million records, achieved six No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Additionally, seven of their albums reached the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart, earning them three Grammy Award nominations.

In a 2019 documentary titled “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” Beard reflected on his musical journey, expressing his satisfaction in finding the right musical companions. He emphasized his unwavering passion for music and dedication to his craft throughout his career.

Frank Beard, who played alongside Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top for six decades, left an indelible mark on the music industry. His legacy lives on, including memorable performances like the one at the 2016 Glastonbury Festival in England.
